Dongjiang Water Supply 60th Anniversary

Victoria Harbour, the harbor that has witnessed Hong Kong's transformation from a small fishing village to a modern international metropolis, is undoubtedly a treasure of Hong Kong, and maintaining its cleanliness is the responsibility of every Hong Kong resident. However, due to the dense population and active urban activities in many older districts along the harbour, some polluted surface runoff inevitably flows into the harbour through the stormwater system, affecting the near-shore water quality. These surface runoff sources are diverse, including roadside wet markets, outdoor eateries, and various cleaning activities in public areas and back alleys. Furthermore, improper connection of sewage pipes to stormwater drains can also lead to sewage flowing into the stormwater system, affecting the water quality and environment along the harbour. For a long time, this has caused a foul stench to permeate this beautiful harbor.

This project, organized by our association and co-organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Piping, aims to address this issue by raising awareness of proper sewage disposal in target areas along the harbour through various public education campaigns and technical demonstrations of pipe misconnection detection. Simultaneously, it encourages harbour property owners and property management companies to address and resolve the problem of improper pipe connections as soon as possible, thereby improving the water quality of Victoria Harbour. The project aims to reduce sewage discharge into Victoria Harbour from multiple sources in order to protect the harbour's water quality.
